Solar Pool Heat

It is a common misconception that solar pool heating is an alternate method of heating a pool. In reality, it is gas and oil heat that are the alternative means. Anybody with an unheated pool knows that given enough time their pool will eventually get into the 80-degree range, although it may take 2/3 of the summer. The sun is the original water heater, so incorporating a solar pool heating system allows you to utilize the sun's energy more fully, every summer, at no cost. Properly sized and installed solar pool heating systems allow you to open your above-ground / below-ground pool earlier in the season and close later, as well as increase the temperature of your pool 12-15 degrees (F) above what it would be without heat….basically, you could be swimming in a 82-degree pool in mid-May, and it would not have cost you a cent.

When you compare the cost of natural gas/oil heating and solar pool heating it is obvious which is more economical. A new natural gas heater can cost anywhere from $2000-$3500, and can run from $300-$1000 per year to heat the pool. On the other hand, a solar pool heat system should cost between $1800 and $4500 (for south-facing roof mounted system), but will never cost you a cent, ever.
